What is skills training?

The people who do jobs that require skills training build our roads and bridges, care for us when we are sick, move food and essential goods across the country, keep our utilities running, and so much more. National Skills Coalition (NSC) fights for a national commitment to inclusive, high-quality skills training so that more people have access to a better life, and more local businesses see sustained growth.

Since 2000, through expert analysis and technical assistance, broad-based organizing, targeted advocacy, and cutting-edge communications, NSC has changed hundreds of state and federal skills policies that have changed thousands of lives and grown local businesses and economies.

How we do our work matters:

We are a pragmatic honest broker

We craft and advocate for inclusive skills policies that benefit a broad range of workers and businesses, scale what’s working on the ground through public investment, mobilize a broad range of stakeholders to action, and garner bi-partisan support.

We are grounded in networks

We build networks representing businesses, workers, colleges, community organizations, public officials, and advocates. We engage these networks to craft policy proposals and mobilize them to win concrete policy change. Our networks include SkillSPAN (20 state affiliate coalitions), Business Leaders United for Workforce Partnerships (thousands of small and medium-sized business owners and 7 state affiliates), and Voices for Skills (tens of thousands of workers and grassroots skills advocates).

We are experts across policy silos

We believe that more people will have access to a better life, and more local businesses will see sustained growth, if inclusive skills training is central to workforce, education, and anti-poverty policies. Therefore, we have staff experts and engage local and national partners in all of these areas.

We communicate broadly

We seek to understand the views of and communicate with the American public to build a national movement in support of inclusive skills training as an economic priority.
